What drives someone to leave certainty behind and follow a quiet pull toward the unknown?
In this episode of Rebel Artists Through Time (RATT), we sit down with Rob Stimpson, an award-winning Canadian photographer whose work has taken him from Canada’s northern wilderness to the frozen frontiers of the Arctic and Antarctica.
Rob’s creative path was not carefully planned — it was answered. After an unexpected career turning point, he followed intuition into a life shaped by patience, presence, and the discipline of truly seeing. From moments of stillness on polar ice to years spent teaching others how to slow down and look, Rob reflects on what it means to create meaningful work in a world obsessed with speed and output.
This conversation explores creativity not as ambition, but as attention, and art not as conquest, but as witness.
In This Episode
- Creativity as a calling rather than a career ladder
- Learning to slow down in extreme environments
- Seeing versus shooting — and why patience matters
- Art as a form of environmental witness
- Teaching photography as a way of understanding the world
- Living in the present moment as a creative practice
Rob also shares the story behind Polar Shift, his exhibition presented at TIFF in Toronto (November 14–16), featuring photographs from the Arctic and Antarctic that capture both the beauty and fragility of Earth’s polar regions.
About the Guest
Rob Stimpson is an expedition photographer, guide, and educator whose work has taken him to some of the most remote landscapes on Earth. His photography has been featured in Parks Canada projects, Ontario Tourism campaigns, international exhibitions, and polar expeditions in both the Arctic and Antarctica.
Beyond his own practice, Rob has spent decades teaching photography as a way of learning how to see — encouraging students to slow down, observe, and create with intention. His work explores the relationship between wilderness, time, and human presence, often in environments where silence and restraint matter more than speed.
